What is this scam? How do I determine if this is a scam?

The IRS scam robocall is fairly well-known. But that doesn't make it any less frightening when it happens to you. This scam capitalizes on people's fear of government and increasing fines. IRS robocallers typically call and threaten you about unpaid taxes. The scammers may request payment in a format the IRS would not accept -- such as wire transfer or gift card. Additionally, the IRS scammers will be very pushy -- they want payment immediately, and they cannot wait. You may be threatened with escalating fees and fines, additional penalties, and all manner of scary consequences to try and get your money. The IRS robocall is guaranteed to be a scam. The real IRS will never call you about unpaid taxes or fines. The IRS, like most government agencies, communicates primarily by mail. So you can be assured -- the call you're receiving about those back taxes or hefty fines is a scam.
