Today, I called customer the MACY'S Credit Card service (1-888-257-6757) and ended up in what was hands-down the strangest social engineering attempt I’ve ever experienced. The rep asked me for information she should already have had, then claimed she was sending a verification code to my phone—and requested I read it back to her. That’s a classic social engineering scam tactic. Even worse, the text message itself explicitly stated: “We’ll NEVER call or text asking for this code.” I hung up immediately. When I tried calling the fraud department, I got the exact same person again. Moments later, she called me back using what looked like a typical robocall spam number (833) 926-5307. If this isn’t a major security issue, I don’t know what is.
