This a legitimate number for SSA, HOWEVER scammers can use apps to show this as the number they are calling from. If you are EXPECTING a call from SSA you can likely trust it. When in doubt ask for the agents direct callback info and call them back. Many services are available at www.ssa.gov

This number is being used for scam calls! Our elderly mother received a call from this # at 9:30pm claiming to be the Social Security office calling and convinced her to provide all her financial information.

I seen on the Internet, where this number has been turned in multiple times as being a scam. I never did call them back because I never called Social Security and this voicemail looked really odd to me. I don’t know why I didn’t block it earlier.

The caller number was 800 997 9640, the callback number was 866 226 2306. Both are legitimate social security numbers.

This number is definitely a scam. SS will never ask for bank information to try and “find” or “verify” you. Sad this is what some scammers have come to. The scam number was: +1 (800) 997-9540
