I got a call from this number this morning claiming that they are HSBC (which is my bank) and that there were unauthorized transactions on my credit card account. They knew my full name and my full address. They said transactions were made on an international website and in order for me to get the money back, I would have to provide my card's expiration date and CVV. I was driving at that time and stopped to talk with them and there was no internet service so I couldn't see if any transactions were showing on my banking app. I gave them my expiration date but stopped there and didn't give them CVV. I asked them "how do I know you are not a scammer?" and they said that the scammers already have my card details and they wouldn't call me for any reason because they already made the purchases. So I said "bank wouldn't ask me for CVV either". The guy said "it's for verification" and I said "you can verify me in other ways". They claimed I had to provide CVV. So I asked them where they were calling from and they said "from Orlando, FL". I happen to know that HSBC does not have operations center in Florida so that was a red flag. The scammer was very polite and did not threaten. He said though that we only have 20 minutes to block these transactions and if I do not provide the CVV, the transactions will go through and I will have to later open a dispute and the investigations department will take 15-18 days to respond. He also said "if you are not comfortable giving your CVV, you can call the bank to be sure". So I said, OK, I will do that. I hang up and called the number from the back of the card and talked to Fraud - they said there were no suspicious activity on my account but since I gave the scammer my expiration date, we will close this card and issue a new one. Later I checked the number that originally called me and it's this number: (800) 975-4722 which is a legit HSBC number - so was it a scammer or not?
