Calls from 800-321-9637 are probably legit for most people since it is listed on the exeterfinance website. However, I have never done business with Exeter and never even heard of Exeter until today when I received a call that said Exeter on Caller ID. I could barely understand the caller's Indian accent. He called me by my first name, but telemarketers do that all the time as phone book information is widely available. The scammer said that I owe money on a car loan with them that needs to be paid. I then immediately knew this was a scam since I have never used Exeter before and both of our cars have been fully paid off for 10+ years now lol. So I ask this scam scum, "Which car loan do I owe money for and how much do I owe?" The scammer replies, "Please tell me your Visa credit card number and Social Security number to prove your identity." I quietly smile to myself, knowing that real debt collectors do not ask for your SSN, My cat-and-mouse game continues for about 10 minutes while I pretend to sound concerned and he continues to tell me nonsense, keeps asking for my credit card numbers, SSN, and also asks for my bank account and routing numbers, and he also says that I can pay by buying an eBay gift card and giving him the number code from it. Who would believe this payment using an eBay gift card??? lol Total b-s scam! I keep pausing him while I pretended to get my credit cards and checkbook and then I tell him several fake Visa card numbers and I can hear him immediately trying to use each Visa card number that I tell him. He finally gives up, shouts profanities at me, and I start laughing. Long story short... always remember this: scammers can spoof a fake Caller ID name and number that look like a valid bank or business faster than you can change your underwear!! Many people still do not know this and believe that a call is legit just because the Caller ID says a name that they do business with. Trusting the Caller ID of unsolicited calls is the easiest way to get scammed!
