What is this scam? How do I determine if this is a scam?

Job offer robocalls are calls that offer you a job. Often the job sounds fantastic -- you'll be working from home, making 100K, and other huge perks. Unfortunately, the job isn't real. Scammers are looking for your money or your personal information. A common variant of this scam involves sending your "first check" with an overage. You're only supposed to get $2,000 -- but you receive a check for $5,000. You're told to forward the extra money onto a third party, or to buy office supplies from a specific supplier. The check bounces a few weeks later, leaving your bank account overdrawn. Scammers got the "extra money" (your money) because they were the third party supplier. Younger folks often fall for job offer scams. With little professional experience and often desperate need to begin employment, young adults fall prey to job offer robocalls.

Job Offer
Caller Name: "Sandy" from Energy Network

"Sandy" (female) from Energy Network calling me about a job - that I never applied for! Sophistication level makes me think this call is especially dangerous. They've kept track of how many times they've called and I've not answered because their voicemail messages refer to previous attempts to reach me and they use language to make me think they're losing patience and I'm going to miss out on something BIG!

These people called yet again! I blocked their number, but their call goes to voicemail. They left this message: "Hi, this is Sandy and I'm still attempting to reach you regarding a potential position with energy network. I just got out of a meeting and my hostess asked if you and I had a chance to discuss and of course, I told them that we hadn't yet. When you get this message, would you do me a favor and either give me a call and let me know that you're not interested, and I'll go ahead and scratch your name off of our candidate list, or we can send through Thursday so I can get you the details and see if there's some synergy. My number is 800-241-2561. Again, that s 800-241-2561. Looking forward to chatting with you soon." They previously called: 10:03 AM 9/1/2020 10:35 AM 8/25/2020 2:43 PM 8/18/2020
