First I received a text from 41996 identifying as Elan and directing me to call 800-236-8873. I had an Elan card way in the past, but paid it off long ago. I called the number out of sheer curiosity and the first thing I was asked for was my SSN. When I said I wasn't comfortable providing that, I was transferred. The next person asked me for the last 4 and when I said I wasn't comfortable sharing that, she got really snippy and said "the last 4? No one can do anything with 4!" That pretty much solidified who/what I was dealing with..

Seems like a phishing scam. If it was the real deal they would have an actual human call and try to negotiate with you and try to collect literally any amount of the outstanding debt. That is their one and only interest when contacting you.
