What is this scam? How do I determine if this is a scam?

While many debt collection calls are legitimate, scammers also use debt collection calls. They may call about a phony or old debt and try to scare you into paying. Debt collection scammers often want immediate payment. These robocallers may also request a method a legitimate collection agency would never use -- debt collection scammers often push for gift cards or wire transfer.

Debt Collector
Caller Name: Crmg

Call came in today, rang 1.5 times and ended. No message or full rings before a vm would have auto picked up. Caller ID says Crmg (lowercase on the letters I didn't capitalize is how the ID was listed) area code is for MN. If you google CRMG is CRMG, LLC ("Compattia Roccia Management Group, LLC”) is a debt collection agency based in Buffalo, New York. So why they are using a MN area code and don't have their name properly displayed on the phone means to me they are outsourcing debts. According to this law site which is the 1st thing that comes up when you google CRMG buys old debts (read full notice on the site this is just a clip)--- Debt collectors like CRMG, LLC cannot harass you over a debt. You have rights under the law, and we will stop the harassment once and for all. THE BEST PART IS… If CRMG, LLC violated the law, you will get money damages and they will pay your attorney’s fees and costs. You won’t owe us a dime for our services. Plus, some of our clients also receive debt relief and cleaned-up credit reports. You have nothing to lose! Call us today at 888-572-0176 for a free consultation. Who is CRMG, LLC? CRMG, LLC ("Compattia Roccia Management Group, LLC”) is a debt collection agency based in Buffalo, New York. Founded in 2016, it is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB-listed telephone number is 716-482-1708 and the main website is CRMG, LLC Complaints The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that applies to everyone in the United States. In other words, everyone is protected under the FDCPA, and this Act is a laundry list of what debt collectors can and cannot do while collecting a debt, as well as things they must do while collecting debt. If CRMG, LLC is harassing you over a debt, you have rights under the FDCPA. there is much more but you get the picture. Search them on that site or others, jus don't answer folks. Top FDCPA Violations: Communicated (phone or letter) with you after you filed for bankruptcy. Communicated (phone or letter) with you after you told the collector you have a lawyer. Called you about a debt you do not owe after you informed the collector you do not owe the debt. Called you at work after you told them you cannot receive such calls at work. Left you a message without identifying the company’s name. Left you a message without disclosing that the call is from a debt collector. Called third parties (family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors) even though the collection agency knows your contact information. Disclosed to a third party (family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors) that you owe a debt. Contacted you after you told the collection agency, in writing, to stop contacting you. Threatened you with legal action (such as a lawsuit or wage garnishment) even though the collection agency does not intend to follow through with its threat. Called you before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM. Continued to call you after you have told the collector you cannot pay the debt.

This number left a voice message- never referencing me by name or what “debt” they’re referencing, nor a dollar amount or any valid references. If you are in debt, you will receive legitimate mail, not a recorded call from a teenager stumbling over his words.

Debt Collector

This was an automated call that seemed more like a phishing scam.
