What is this scam?

While many debt collection calls are legitimate, scammers also use debt collection calls. They may call about a phony or old debt and try to scare you into paying. Debt collection scammers often want immediate payment. These robocallers may also request a method a legitimate collection agency would never use -- debt collection scammers often push for gift cards or wire transfer.

Caller Name: Brenda Benson

Scam

Began with a robocall, "Hello, this is an important message (my name) if you are (my name), please press 1 - to put this call on hold in order to bring (my name) to the phone, please press 2 - if you are not (my name) but would like to speak to an agent please press 3 - to repeat this message please press 4. (I pressed 3, as I wanted to speak to someone to see who knew my full name) "Brenda Benson" asked if (my name) was available. I did not confirm and asked for the name of her office. She refused to give me the name of who she was with. Continued to repeat her name and continued to ask if (my name) was available. When I pressed her for the name of her office, she said she could not disclose that unless I confirmed that I was who I said I was. I told her that made no sense. She then asked if she could leave a message with (my name), and I said "if she is at this number, she wouldn't call back if she didn't know who you were with." She said she would put that in her notes and hung up.

Caller Name: State Collections…

Someone who stated his name and asked if I would verify the information that they had on hand for my identity in which case I told him no and that they called me so I’m not giving them any information. The caller ID showed something like CPGS or something like that but he identified the company as State collections blah blah blah….

Silence from spammers. Praise from the press.
