Portfolio Recovery is actually a real collection agency, however one that is known for illegal practices. They are at the top of the list for both suing for collections as well as being sued themselves for illegal and harassing tactics, and are known for buying debt that is either long past the legal collection limit, or have been legally settled. Even if you do owe, DO NOT deal with these sharks. Court complaints against them for ignoring legal demands to cease and desist, as well as ignoring verified documentation that the debt they are trying to collect has been settled, are increasingly common.
